When I originally acquired Darvish, it was with the intent of trying to compete in 2016 and dealing him around midseason if I thought I was out of it. Well, it's midseason and I may be in 4th place, but I'm 40 points out. So Darvish is going to be a valuable asset for Brent as he is right in the thick of things. Dude is a top 5 starter in baseball when he's healthy and he's already hitting 98 on the gun. Hurts to give him up, but I have to be realistic and continue my goal of competing in 2017 and 2018. He asked about Sabathia late in the deal and we added the pieces to make it work. I took on Wright and Castro strictly as salary offsets for Brent.
My whole reasoning for doing this is the four bright, young arms I'm getting back. Eickhoff is clearly established as a legit #3 in the bigs and I'm excited to see how else he can improve. Newcomb comes with command issues, but the talent to be a dominant Ace is there. I finally got Mella and Guerrieri back after he pried them away from me in the Reed deal. I'm higher on Guerrieri than Mella, as I think Mella eventually moves to the pen. But they each are very talented to say the least.
Very productive talks as always with Brent.

This deal is pretty much about "All in for 2016." While I have been wanting to acquire a premium arm, hence me initiating talks on Darvish, the trepidation increase as we got closer to the finalized deal, mainly from "mortgaging the future for the present" so to speak. In the end, my desire to make a serious run for this year took priority, and as Scarlett O'Hara said in Gone With the Wind, "I'll think about that (being competitive in a fantasy baseball league in future years) tomorrow" LOL. I think Darvish will fit right in with what I need, and am hoping CC can give me the short term benefits as well. As always, Tripp and myself have very good talks/negotiations. We both have always understood each other's needs (I'm talking fantasy baseball here guys) and do our best to accommodate them. Watch out Alex, I'm gunning for you!
