Please post in this thread any specific question(s) you may have about the rules and/or how Diamond Duos III will be run. Thanks.

In the initial draft, do players in arbitration get the 1 year contracts they sign, or do they get the 2 year ones they would get from a franchise tag?

We will use the projected arbitration salaries for those players going through arbitration entering our initial season. I'll have an MLBTradeRumors website link that we'll use. These salaries will be increased by $1M for 2017 and another $1M for 2018 depending if the player has 1, 2 or 3 years or arbitration left. Actually there may be a player here and there that have 4 years.
For example, a player is going into his first year of arbitration could look something like this. If the website projects his 2016 arbitration salary to be $2.4M, then his Diamond Duos contract (if you want to retain him as one of your original keepers) would be: 16: $2.4M, 17: $3.4M, 18: $4.4M
** One important note on these Arb players though is that you are able to non tender with no penalty. So after the 16 or 17 season you could non tender and have no cap penalty for the remaining season(s) on the contract.

How many games at a position does a player need to qualify?
|
|
|
Post by Chicago Cub Sox (Scott) on Oct 23, 2015 12:29:00 GMT -5
For position players it's 20 games played from previous season at a position to qualify there, unless it's a Fantrax "Primary" position.
Here's the complete list from the League Setup. Position Eligibility
Games needed from previous season for a player to qualify at a hitting position: 20
Games needed from current season for a player to qualify at a hitting position: 10
Starts needed from previous season for a player to qualify as a starter : 5
Starts needed from current season for a player to qualify as a starter : 5
Relief appearances needed from previous season for a player to qualify as a reliever : 5
Relief appearances needed from current season for a player to qualify as a reliever: 5
Use Fantrax's default position(s) even if player qualifies for at least one position based on above criteria: Yes

From the rules re: outrighting to minors:
Does the bolded section mean that the claiming team gets the outrighted player at a new contract? Or something else? The "releasing players" section doesn't address this situation. Could you give an example that shows how this might work?

Hey Alex,
Sorry I missed this before. My understanding is you'd claim him on his existing salary. Eg I outright John Doe, 15:6M, 16:6M on Monday at 12 noon.
Anyone is free to claim him before Wednesday at 12 noon, but has to have him on their majors roster and has to be able to accommodate the salary (either because they had room available, or by releasing players and having room, after accounting for either 25% or 50% of their salary as a remaining liability)
If after 48h nobody has claimed I can keep John Doe on my minors for the rest of the season. If more than one person claims him, it's decided by the inverse of standings (presumably preseason by draft order?)

ok, that makes sense and it's what I would expect, just wanted to make sure because the wording is not correct.

Yes, thanks Henry. This is correct. If someone claims within 48 hours then that owner assumes full contract and player goes to that 40-man roster. If nobody claims after 48 hours then player is transferred to a spot in the Minors. Salary/contract stays in tact and still counts against team cap but you open a 40-man roster spot. If owner already has 60 minors spots filled then a Minor leaguer either has to be promoted to Majors or released to open that roster spot for the player that was outrighted.

If a player retires or dies while under contract, is the team controlling him still responsible for the cap hit?

Hey Brendan- if a player retires or dies, you are off the hook for any obligations. Not 100% sure if that applies to an older player going to Japan or Korea, but I think it might.
We had a discussion this year in DD1 as to what to do about Free Agent bidding where a player had announced he would retire (ie David Ortiz) after a season and it was concluded that only 1Y contracts were allowed to avoid people doing a two-year contract, back weighting and being absolved from a cap hit next year because of retirement. But we can deal with those cases prior to free agency on a case by case basis, where it is clear that a player is in his swansong season. But that only concerns offering the contract - if a player is under a pre-existing contract and retires, the contract can be terminated with no charge.

This was about LaRoche, who retired yesterday because the Sox didn't want his kid in the clubhouse everyday. I wouldn't have passed on $13m for that, but to each his own.

Oh yeah, I hadn't put 2+2 together on that. Absolutely insane- although it's really weird the club doesn't just have a blanket rule, how is it even an issue? It's distracting and if everyone did it it would be like a creche!

If I have a player on my 40-man roster who has not passed prospect minimums, can I outright him back to the minors and keep his prospect status (i.e. not start the clock on his contract) assuming he doesn't pass the minimums this year? Or is there no point in sending him back down (i.e. Once the clock starts it can't be undone.

The constitution is pretty clear on this point, you would only get another year if the player was never on your scoring 25 man.

Correct. If the player has not passed any of the thresholds (130 AB, 50 IP or 20 pitching appearances) AND has never been in any weekly scoring lineup, THEN you'd be able to demote back to minors. If a player is in ANY weekly lineup during the season, regardless if he's passed any of the thresholds, his first $500K season starts the following year.

If I were to buy out Fielder, and then later his injuries cause him to retire, would I be freed of the buyout payments?

In relation to what Alex asked, am I responsible for John Danks contracted now that he is out of the league? That's like a player retiring. Unless it's Bobby Bonilla lol

If a player is retired from MLB then you're not on the hook for any subsequent year salaries.

Does that include buyout penalties?

|
|
Post by Chicago Cub Sox (Scott) on Aug 4, 2016 14:31:13 GMT -5
Yes. If Player A is 16:$10M, 17:$10M, 18:$6M club option ($1M buyout) and he retires in 2017, then you're not on the hook for anything if you release him in 2017 or 2018.

|
Post by Texas Giants (Alex) on Aug 4, 2016 14:48:25 GMT -5
But if you had released him in 2016? Would you still be on the hook for the 2.5M in '17 and the 1M in `18 after he retires?

That's ok too, if a player retires, any pre-existing obligations are wiped out.

Where can I find the draft board for 2017 so that I may know what picks I and others have to work with in trade negotiations? I see from my predecessor's notes that there were some trades of picks.
